Folks walking around Copley Square in Boston Tuesday stumbled upon a mountain of Butterfinger candy bars and a sign that reads “Thank you, Wes Welker.”

Welker, of course, dropped a pass from Tom Brady with the Patriots clinging to a 17-15 lead and in need of a first down to try to salt the game away.

The drop — or bad throw by Brady, you be the judge — led to a Patriots punt and Eli Manning led the Giants on an 88-yard game-winning drive.

The operation behind the stunt is pawngo.com, an Internet pawn shop based in Denver that wanted to have a little fun an insert itself in the middle of the Boston vs. New York rivalry (they’re Tim Tebow fans). In doing so they dumped 900 pounds of the peanut butter candy bar in the Back Bay neighborhood.

“It wasn’t a direct shot at Wes Welker,” a company spokesman insisted. “He wasn’t the only one dropping passes.”

Whether it was a direct shot or not, the company spent a few bucks on the stunt — an average Butterfinger bar weighs 60 grams, so they bought about 6,800 bars — and say it was well worth it.

I hope so, because there’s reports that it just got more expensive… Mayor Menino fined the company for commercial dumping!
