Woman Who Cut David Bowie’s Hair Auctions It Off 33 Years Later

by Alisha Jackson

Thirty three years have passed since “wig mistress” Wendy Farrier cut David Bowie‘s hair for her job at Madame Tussauds, and now she’s ready to cash in.

The current bid for Bowie’s alleged lock of hair is at $2,000, but experts at Heritage Auctions predict that Bowie’s DNA could fetch upwards of tens of thousands of dollars. Along with the lock of hair comes a letter of authenticity, extensive photographic and written evidence, and a framed photo of Wendy in the background of Davie Bowie’s Madame Tussauds wax figure session, where the sample has lived for the past thirty three years.

According to Wendy, hair samples were usually tossed after they were color matched with their respective wax figures at Madame Tussauds. Her letter reads, “The head of the Tussauds studio during my employment was a talented sculptor called Ian Hanson, and my head of department was the innovative wigmaker Ray Martson. They both knew I was a Bowie fan and kindly let me take the hair samples when he came for a sitting in 1983.” “Once hair simples were matched with any figures at Madame Tussauds they were discarded as a matter of course, so there was amusement when I asked to keep one from the selection taken from Bowie and there were no objections,” she explains.

At the end of Wendy’s letter, she states, “I can honestly and sincerely say that this is a genuine sample of David Bowie’s hair from 1983 that I cut from his head myself and have kept all these years. I am now offering it at Heritage Auctions in their June 2016 auction.”
